How to be a Responsible Netizen?

Journey to a Responsible World of Internet

Everyday, we're bombarded with our friends' statuses on Facebook about their sentiments or the current happenings in their lives, our classmates' annoying tweets about the amount of requirements that need to be done, or our friends'  Instagram stories about the food they just ate. And just to remind you! These are just the common ones! What would happen if I included the other social media accounts? It would be a total chaos!

Here in the Philippines, we have this so called 'freedom of speech', we are allowed to express whatever we feel or whatever is going on in our minds, wherever we are, and whenever we want. But would you get mad at me if I tell you that this kind of mindset isn't really good for us?

It's okay to post whatever we would want as long as we know what we're posting. Will it be life-changing? Will others have a positive feedback? Will it cause you trouble? Sometimes we forget about these things and don't even think before we click the 'Post' button.

Social media would always be social media. Whatever you post in your accounts will forever be there. Do you know that IT experts have ways to retrieve your deleted posts? Some would even take a screenshot of your post and share it to their friends and make you a 'famous person' on any social media account.

But don't worry! I'll be giving you some tips on how to be a responsible netizen!

1. Think before you click

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are just some of the social networking sites we commonly use. It may be a good place where you could your sentiments and they may be very fun to use, but make sure that you think first before you click the 'Post' button. Before sharing something on your timeline, ask yourself first. Is it worth sharing? Will it harm someone else? Remember that anything you post online could put you at risk or harm somebody. So, be a smart and an alert netizen.

2. Be careful of what you say

Be attentive at all times, so that your post or comment won't appear rude, insensitive, or arrogant. A hurriedly written comment can cause you embarrassment and would remain at other netizens' minds forever. So, be polite and respectful when interacting with your friends and followers.

3. Be amusing, not annoying

I guess, you'll also hate it if you see the same posts over and over again. Posting ten different kinds of statuses could be such an eye-sore to somebody. Please be considerate. One post is enough, twice is okay, but more than that? It's way too much. Think of it, would you like your friends to unfriend or unfollow you? Or worst to block you?

4. Be careful when speaking about religion and politics

Oh, boy! These controversial topics would want you to think twice before you click that 'Post' button. Some people won't take it lightly and you could end up in a big trouble! So, be cautious and think first.

5. Don't share fake news

It is now easier for fake news to spread fast, especially in today's generation where you could share something in just one click. Fake news could cause panic and make people do bad choices.  So before sharing something, make sure you read it thoroughly and do a fact check from reliable sources.

6. Do not engage in cyberbullying and other internet crimes

It is okay to share your own point of views, but remember that not everyone has the same opinion about something. Don't bully someone for him, not having the same vision as you. It's no good. Never criticize someone without knowing the real reason behind the issue.

7. Consider others' feelings

It can be easy to forget that we are talking to real people and not computers when we're behind the screen. Always remember that there is another person on the other side. Know that they also have feelings, so always be careful and respectful at all times.

These are just a few tips on how to become a wise and responsible netizen. I hope that after you've read everything, you know that it's important to consider a lot of things before clicking that 'Post' button. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and other social networking sites are very fun to use, but it won't be fun if we are bringing somebody down and embarrassing them, we could change the world of internet with what we do. It starts with us.
